#The charming herb – creeping cinquefoil

Creeping cinquefoil is a charming plant with yellow flowers, which we can see everywhere in the meadows of our beautiful, herb-rich country.

Although its stem is only a modest 10–15 centimetres tall, it stands out with its sunny radiance and the sense of light it gives the observer. Whether you are going for a walk in the woods, have stopped for a rest on a long car journey, or are simply sitting and reflecting on a not-too-high rock, look out for its sunny smile, which can brighten your day and delight someone dear to you.

#Botanical characteristics of "Potentilla reptans L."

The rich soil conditions in Bulgaria allow this herb to thrive everywhere in the country. It can be found in dry, sunny places, in meadows, on pastures and along waste water, in coastal and sandy areas, and on seashores covered with seaweed.

The herb is a hardy, creeping, low-growing perennial that flowers with small yellow blossoms and reaches up to 20 cm in height.

The rhizome is usually short and thick, dark brown on the outside and red on the inside; when cut, a characteristic dark radiating pattern can be seen.

From its black base grow thin, rooting runners (somewhat like strawberries), and it also produces a rosette of basal, divided leaves that are dark green on top and covered with silvery hairs underneath.

The leaves are sessile (on the stem) or short-stalked (at the base), three-lobed and coarsely toothed, with large stipules. They are divided into five segments resembling the five fingers of a human hand. This is where its Bulgarian name ("five-finger") comes from.

It belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae) and is a honey plant. Creeping cinquefoil belongs to the genus Potentilla.

The flower cup consists of 5 short petals that are heart-shaped.

The flowers grow singly in the leaf axils on long stalks; they are yellow, with numerous stamens. They are partly closed in dull weather and close completely at night.

It flowers from June to September. The species is hermaphrodite (it has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by bees and flies. The plant is self-fertile.

The fruit is a wrinkled dry nutlet with numerous seeds.

The root has a bitter, astringent taste.

It is suitable for light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: slightly acidic, neutral and basic (slightly alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in shade. It prefers dry or moist soil.

#Where and when can we find creeping cinquefoil?

As we have already mentioned, the plant is extremely widespread across Bulgaria.

Its "favourite" locations are meadows with short grass and rocky areas. Bear in mind that it is highly invasive and has a rather aggressive "character" – once it appears, it spreads extremely quickly and rarely gives up ground.

Creeping cinquefoil is found in damp meadows, marshy places and peat bogs, but also in stony places in the foothill and mountain belts of all our mountains.

It can be found from late spring to late summer, and it is invariably present in every self-respecting bouquet gathered by mountaineers and hikers.

#The herb creeping cinquefoil – "Potentilla reptans L."

The Latin name of the plant, “Potentilla reptans L.”, literally means "small but mighty". We could hardly find a phrase that more accurately describes the qualities of this sunny herb.

In ancient times it was believed that it could even protect against supernatural beings such as witches and samodivi (wood nymphs). This quality is also related to its Bulgarian name, because apart from its leaf having that shape, it was believed that the five-finger herb "offers a helping hand" and protects those in need.

Folk beliefs go so far as to claim that putting the herb in your pocket attracts abundance and luck. In Ancient China it was used specifically as a spell for love.

Other namesby which the plant is known are "Cinquefoil", "Creeping cinquefoil" and, in Bulgaria, "garlicheva treva" (throat grass) and "palzyashta tintyava" (creeping gentian).
