#History and origin of Klinaviche - Astragalus
The history of the plant goes back thousands of years. It is first mentioned as a remedy for cleansing the spleen and the blood in an ancient Chinese medical text, which suggests that the herb has been used in China for more than 2,000 years.

As for its origin , it is believed to come from Europe, but it is also widespread in Asia Minor.
The plant belongs to the family “Fabaceae” (Leguminosae) — the legume family.
#Distribution of the herb Orlovi nokti
Klinaviche is found all over Bulgaria, growing in thickets, woods, on rocks, in the foothills and the mountains, and in forest glades at altitudes of up to 2,000 metres.

#Other names of the Klinaviche plant
In various sources it appears under many different names - “Astragalus” (“Astragalus glycyphyllos L”), “Vrani nokti”, “Orlovi nokti”, ”Sgrabiche”, “Sladkolisten klin”.
In Western sources - under names carried over into different languages: in English — “Milk vetch”, in Russian — “Astragal solodkolistny”, in French — “Reglissae sauvage”, in German — “Baren”, “Wolffschote, A.” — Milk vetch.

#Botanical characteristics
The Klinaviche plant is perennial and is distinguished by a strongly branched stemthat reaches a height of 30 to 130 cm.
It also has a deep vertical root.
Its leaves are alternate, short-stalked, with 4-8 pairs of elliptical to ovate leaflets.
The flowers are yellow-green, gathered in raceme-like inflorescences.
The fruit is 3-4 cm long, oblong in shape, a sickle-shaped curved pod full of reddish-brown smooth seeds (like beans). It flowers in the months of June-August.

#Chemical composition of Astragalus
Interestingly, the flowering shoots and the fruits of the medicinal plant have a different chemical composition. That is why they are used in specific ways to treat different conditions.
The above-ground part of the plant contains: flavonoids, ascorbic acid, tannins, saponins, organic acids, trace elements. The plant also contains glycyrrhizin, asparagine, bitter substances, mannitol, dextrose, 15—20% protein, and traces of alkaloids.

The parts of the herb that can be used are the flowering shoots and the ripe fruits. The latter are picked in July and August. At that time the pods are ripe and dark red to brown in colour. The shoots are up to 30 cm long and are cut at the end of the herb's flowering in May.
#Medicinal properties of Klinaviche:
#The herb Klinaviche for inflammation of the respiratory tract
The Klinaviche plant has many beneficial actions, but it is best known and most widely used for treating inflammation of the respiratory tract.
It is also particularly effective for stomach or duodenal ulcers, chronic gastritis, adrenal insufficiency, for relieving the symptoms of arthritis and rheumatic pain, and in the treatment of catarrh of the upper respiratory tract.
The herb is also used for diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract; in cases of radiculitis, for rheumatism and joint diseases. It is also recommended for abdominal pain, inflammation and bloating of the intestines and stomach.

#Klinaviche is a women's herb
It is included in the treatment and prevention of a number of gynaecological conditions, as well as for increasing milk in breastfeeding mothers. It is also recommended for painful and irregular menstruation, for infertility, as well as for uterine conditions, in order to regulate the menstrual cycle.

In addition, the herb also treats vaginal discharge, and is used to speed up labour. It is also a constant helper in cases of prostatitis, as well as for regulating high blood pressure and cardiovascular insufficiency.
#Other beneficial properties of the herb
Like most herbs, Klinaviche can boast more than one or two properties. The plant has pain-relieving, immunostimulating and hepatoprotective action. It is also considered a diuretic remedy. It acts as an expectorant, and is considered a diuretic, laxative and sweat-inducing remedy.
It has been found to have anti-inflammatory, lactogenic, anabolic and sedative effects.
According to many studies, the herb may be of help to patients after cancer, because it has the ability to restore the function of damaged immune cells.
#Astragalus has antiviral properties

An American study highlights the strong immunostimulating properties of the Klinaviche plant.
An in-vitro study was carried out comparing the blood cells of cancer patients with the blood cells of healthy people. The results show that Klinaviche can to a large extent restore some of the functions of the cells of the immune system in people with cancer.

This is due to the fact that the herb increases the production of interferon, a natural protein that stimulates the production of other proteins that help prevent and fight viral infections. It is precisely this that increases its efficacy in fighting disease, and it also reduces overall morbidity as well as the body's recovery time.
#Klinaviche stimulates the regeneration of cells in the bronchi
A study has been carried out showing that people who took the herb in one form or another were ill for less time – between 2 and 4 days. Correspondingly, those who did not take the herb had complaints for between 4 and 6 days.
