What is anemia?

Anemia is a condition where the number of red blood cells or the concentration of hemoglobin in them is lower than normal. Hemoglobin is necessary for carrying oxygen, and if we have too few or abnormal red blood cells, or insufficient hemoglobin, there will be a reduced capacity of blood to carry oxygen to body tissues. This leads to symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, dizziness and shortness of breath, among others.

The optimal concentration of hemoglobin needed to meet physiological needs varies depending on age, gender, altitude of residence, smoking habits and pregnancy status.

There are gender differences in normal blood values. In men, the number of red blood cells - hemoglobin and hematocrit is higher than in women due to two main reasons - the influence of sex hormones and the menstrual cycle in women.

Other health conditions that interfere with the production of healthy red blood cells or increase the rate of breakdown or loss of these cells can cause anemia.

Anemia can be viewed both as an independent disease (separate nosological unit) and as a symptom of other diseases.

The most common causes of anemia include nutritional deficiencies, especially iron deficiency, although deficiencies in folate, vitamins B12 and A are also important causes; hemoglobinopathies; and infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV and parasitic infections.

The main types of anemia include:

  • Anemia due to vitamin B12 deficiency.

  • Anemia due to folate (folic acid) deficiency.

Anemia can lead to symptoms including fatigue, shortness of breath and dizziness.

Anemia is a serious global public health problem that particularly affects young children and pregnant women. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 42% of children under 5 years of age and 40% of pregnant women worldwide are anemic.

In this article, we explain the types, symptoms and causes of this disease, as well as available treatments and especially natural methods for dealing with it.
