#Medicinal Plants and Herbs - United Under the Name of Herbs
The power of plants to help with various human health problems has been known for hundreds of years.
Medicinal plants and herbs, united under the name of herbs, encompass a large group of plants used in medical and veterinary practice for prevention and treatment of diseases.

They are mentioned even in works of ancient scientists: the Roman physician Galen (129 - c. 201), the founder of Greek medicine Hippocrates (460 - c. 370 BC), Dioscorides (1st century), and the Tajik physician and scientist Abu Ali Ibn Sina - Avicenna.
In his work "Research on Plants", Theophrastus, called the father of botany, says that Thrace was the richest region of medicinal herbs in the world at that time. A detailed description of the herbs used by the Thracians was made by Dioscorides in his work "On Medicinal Substances". Data about the Slavs indicate that they mainly used the medicinal properties of certain tree species - birch, pine, willow, fir, linden, dwarf pine, ash.
One of the first sources about herbal healing practices in the Bulgarian state is "Hexameron" by John the Exarch (7th century), which describes the treatment of pleurisy with willow, hellebore and poplar. The Bogomils were also known for their folk medicine.

"It is proven that herbs contain medicinally active substances that have beneficial effects on the human body."
Along with these, they contain accompanying substances that can enhance the effect of the medicinal substance or have harmful effects.
The active substances are found most abundantly in the leaves and flowers of plants.
To the greatest extent, the active substances in herbs are alkaloids and glycosides. They are contained in 2/3 of the medicinal herbs used by humanity.

It is proven that herbs can help in treating multiple conditions - from respiratory system problems, through cardiovascular diseases, to muscle injuries and even emotional states.
