Cowslip or Common Cowslip (Primula veris L) is a perennial, herbaceous, beautifully flowering plant from the Primrose family (Primulaceae). In Bulgaria, 8 species are known, 4 of which are protected under the Biodiversity Act. You can find it in mountain regions, in forests, meadows, shrublands, and clearings up to 2000 meters above sea level. The Bulgarian names of the herb are: Aglika, Yellow Cowslip, Iglichina. The usable part of the plant is mainly the above-ground part - the stem. They are rich in saponins, enzymes, phenolic glycosides, tannins, flavonoids, and others. Thanks to its active substances, the herb has antioxidant, pain-relieving, antispasmodic, expectorant, mucus-thinning, sedative, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and sweat-inducing effects. It is beneficial for bronchitis, cough, rheumatism, cold, allergies, insomnia, and others. 

Cowslip is used for:

  • menopause
  • various infections and inflammations
  • gastrointestinal disorders
  • nausea and vomiting
