Valerian (Valeriana officinalis L) or Common Valerian is a perennial, herbaceous plant from the Valerian family (Valerianaceae). In Bulgaria, you can find it near streams, lake shores, coastal meadows and other fertile soils, among shrubs, in moist and shady places and meadows at an altitude of up to 1500 m. The usable parts of the plant are the roots, rhizomes, and fruits. They are rich in valerianin, essential oil, glycosides, resins, flavones, alkaloids, enzymes, acetic acid, borneol, formic acid, valerianic acid, pinene, valepotriates - valtrates, acetovaltrates, and dihydrovaltrates. Thanks to its active substances, the herb has a strong sedative effect, calms the central nervous system, helps with insomnia, benefits stress and anxiety, lowers blood pressure, improves heart function. It can relieve muscle and joint pain, menstrual pain and symptoms associated with menopause, helps with poor digestion.

Extract: Cold extract: 2 teaspoons of the herb are soaked in 250 ml of cold water for 12 hours, then strained. Take 1 tablespoon 3-4 times daily. Decoction: 100 g of the herb are poured with 2 L of boiling water and left to soak for 2 hours. Drink 1 cup 2-3 times daily before meals.
